home » About Bright » Murray to Mountains Rail Trail

Train travel has long had a certain romance about it, especially because train lines always seem to trace their way through back country landscapes you often wouldn’t see from a car. And on the now famous Murray to Mountains Rail Trail you can enjoy that glorious countryside at your leisure, because a sealed bitumen walking and bike trail has replaced 98km of the old railway line between Wangaratta and Bright.

The section between Myrtleford and Bright is 30km, and it is non-stop scenery from one town to the next. You’ll see a variety of crops and agricultural pursuits including hops, walnuts and chestnuts, berries and vegetables, roses and garden plants, deer and emu, and of course wine grapes en route to Bright. The Ovens River keeps you company all the way, Mt Buffalo dominates the landscape and the town of Ovens, Eurobin and Porepunkah can be explored along the way.

Because the trail’s gradients are gentle, you could ride from Bright to Myrtleford and back in a day if you’re fit or enjoy a short ride on any section. The section from Bright to Porepunkah is a particularly smooth seal ideal for youngsters, bikes with children’s trailers and adult/child tandems. Bikes and helmets can be hired in Bright and you can arrange pick up or drop off for you and your bike. If you intend riding to or from Wangaratta, V/ line train and bus can bring you and your bike to Wangaratta or Bright
